Departing from conventional political rhetoric, K. Muraleedharan’s statements became the highlight of the KPCC’s new office-bearers' installation event. Instead of sweeping overhauls, he emphasized the need for a few responsible corrections for the party's healthy growth — a stance that received wide appreciation from the gathering.
“A Few Are Enough, Not Everyone”
Muraleedharan remarked that the performance of three or four current district presidents was unsatisfactory, pointing out that some were facing health issues. He stressed the need to retain efficient individuals and make changes only where necessary. He also suggested trimming “jumbo committees” and proposed that all major decisions should be made through internal party discussions.
Beyond Elected Representatives: Opportunity for Full-Time Workers
The recent appointments sparked criticism due to the predominance of elected representatives and the limited opportunities given to full-time party workers. Addressing this, Muraleedharan said, “This is an issue that can be resolved through discussion. I have earlier stated the need for representation of women and Dalits,” he reminded.
Importance of Consultation: A Subtle Finger Point at the High Command
Muraleedharan candidly admitted that there had been no consultation with anyone while finalizing the new office-bearers. He noted that the absence of certain MPs from the event was evidence of this. Yet, he added, “Once the High Command takes a decision, it is the leaders’ responsibility to abide by it.”
Sunny Joseph: A New Beginning with Hope
On the new KPCC president Sunny Joseph, Muraleedharan expressed confidence, highlighting his experience and effective performance in Kannur. Responding to questions about criticism directed at Shashi Tharoor, he pointed out that the Congress has a history of bringing in political newcomers. “Instead of those like Manmohan Singh who upheld discipline, we may now have a different kind,” he remarked, hinting at the need for discipline in newcomers.
Electoral Prospects and CM Candidacy
Muraleedharan expressed confidence that the UDF has strong prospects, which will be evident in the upcoming local body and assembly elections. “There is anti-incumbency. We must work with increased vigor to capitalize on that,” he said. On the Chief Ministerial candidate, he stated that Delhi would take the final decision, but the opinion of elected MLAs would also be considered. On questions regarding community representation, he responded, “Communities haven’t demanded representation. The party itself will maintain a balanced approach.”
Opposition Role and Election Manifesto
“We are not like the CPM, creating a ruckus. That’s the Congress style,” he said with a touch of irony. He advocated for preparing the manifesto through collective discussions. “People will ask how the UDF would address the issues currently being handled by the Left. We must answer that through our manifesto,” he concluded.
Whether K. Muraleedharan’s candid revelations will spark constructive dialogue within the party remains to be seen.
